Stephanie Russell, RDN, LD
Hi! I’m Stephanie Russell, a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist.
My Philosophy
When it comes to nutrition, and health in general, there is no one size fits all. I enjoy supporting clients in discovering and achieving their goals in ways that are accessible and meaningful to them.
One of the reasons I love working at Synergy is the commitment to promoting Health at Every Size® (HAES). This framework ensures every body receives care that is inclusive, free of judgment, and focused on an individual’s inner journey and well-being, which is different for all of us. My goal as your provider is to guide and support your journey!
As a Synergy provider, I love that I get to combine my hand-on community education and clinical nutrition backgrounds to support clients with achieving their health goals. For example, a series of nutrition sessions might entail an office visit, cooking in the Synergy kitchen, a grocery store tour, a walk to the park, or all of the above! Ultimately, session format and approaches are designed based on clients’ individual health goals and interests. The more joyful and meaningful the nutrition care, the better!
My Background and Approach to Nutrition Care
I graduated with my BS in Nutrition and Dietetics from Oregon State University (OSU) in 2005. I enjoyed OSU so much, I later spent 17 years of my career working for the OSU Extension Service’s Family and Community Health program as an Instructor and nutrition education program manager.
During my time with the OSU Extension Service, I taught over 1000 nutrition and cooking classes to individuals and families across the lifespan. Some of the most meaningful work I did was with K-12 students and families in Jefferson and Lincoln Counties. Watching a child taste spinach for the first time, helping a teenager learn to cook, and connecting parents with the resources to help stretch their food dollars are immeasurable joys I will always carry with me.
Prior to my OSU Extension career, in 2007 I completed the Food Science and Nutrition Dietetic Internship Program at Central Washington University, located in Ellensburg, Washington. I then spent my first year as a new dietitian providing Medical Nutrition Therapy to oncology patients undergoing outpatient treatment at Multicare Cancer Institute - North Star Lodge located in Yakima, Washington. It was there I learned the importance of listening, connecting, and tailoring nutrition interventions. Sometimes, this meant the only nutrition ‘intervention’ I offered was a smile or word of encouragement. To this day, I reflect on the stories and strength these patients and their families shared with me. I always will.
