Creating a Safe and Welcoming Healthcare Experience

4/24/2024

In the realm of healthcare, there's a fundamental truth that often gets overshadowed: care isn't just a part of the word ‘healthcare’, it should be the essence of it. As you walk through the doors of Synergy, your comfort and sense of belonging are our foremost concern. This isn't just another provider's visit—it's an opportunity to experience care in a way that honors your body, your experiences, and your humanity. This is a reminder of the type of care that you, as the client, deserve. It's also a gentle nudge to all providers, serving as a how-to guide to cultivate an atmosphere where healing is not just possible but encouraged.

We often hear stories of healthcare visits that feel transactional, cookie cutter, and rushed, leaving patients feeling vulnerable and not listened to. Ideally, every aspect of a visit should be designed to honor your well-being, and create a safe and welcoming environment. Being treated with kindness and respect allows us to feel free, brave, and empowered to heal.

Warm and Welcoming Environment

Healthcare settings sometimes lack warmth and comfort, with sterile waiting areas and examination rooms that can feel cold and unwelcoming. The physical environment should be intentionally designed to promote comfort and relaxation. From comfortable, accessible-to-all seating to a smiling, welcoming face, every detail should be chosen with your well-being in mind. Care should be taken and shown around magazines, posters, digital advertisements, and conversations in common spaces so that you feel represented, included, and that you are there to receive healing, not peddling services or goods that are aimed at the body project.

Clear Communication and Collaboration

A provider that takes the time to listen to concerns, answer questions, and collaboratively involve clients in the treatment plan every step of the way makes them feel supported and empowered.
In contrast, if a provider dictates treatment plans without considering the individual experiences and input, it pulls that person out of embodiment and often leaves them feeling more confused and less hopeful about their ability to change their health or behaviors.
We trust our clients and believe they are the wisest residents in their bodies; our role is to support and encourage them on their journey and provide gentle guidance when they need or desire it.

Accessibility for All

Bodies of all shapes, sizes, and abilities need consideration within the healthcare space. Facilities should be equipped with features like ramps, accessible parking, and other accommodations to ensure that everyone can access the care they need without having to ask. Additionally, diversity should be visible, celebrated, and honored throughout the space; from clients and staff members who represent a variety of backgrounds to artwork and media that reflects the richness of our community.

Safety, Confidentiality and Authenticity

Being human can be tricky sometimes, and that's okay. There's no need to feel shame about your body or any struggles you may be facing. Clients should feel comfortable sharing their thoughts, concerns, and experiences without fear of judgment or stigma. Seek providers who support you with compassion and understanding, every step of the way.

Continuous Improvement

At Synergy, we're always striving to improve our services and provide you with the best possible experience. Your feedback is invaluable to us, so please don't hesitate to let us know how we can better serve you. Together, we can create an environment where everyone feels safe, welcomed, and empowered to heal.
In conclusion, a safe and welcoming healthcare experience is about more than just treating symptoms—it's about respecting your body, your experiences, and your humanity. It's about creating a community where everyone feels valued and honored. Thank you for entrusting us with your nutrition, diabetes, and massage care. We are honored to partner with you on our journeys towards health and wellness.
